It has been just about six months since Kim Kardashian was infamously robbed at gunpoint in her apartment in Paris, an event that understandably was a whirlwind for the mega-star.

Noticeably disappearing from social media for weeks afterwards, and only recently revealing more details on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” Kim sat down with family friend Ellen DeGeneres to talk about the aftermath and how it’s changed her life.

Her biggest takeaway from the experience? Everything happens for a reason.

Kim told Ellen, 

I know this sounds crazy, but I know that was meant to happen to me. I don’t want to start crying, but I know that was so meant to happen to me. I’m such a different person. I really feel like things happen in your life to teach you things.

She went on to explain how in the past, she would proudly show off the material items she knows she has worked hard for and — being careful to distinguish there is nothing wrong with that kind of attitude — says it’s just not a priority of hers anymore.
